This Is My Desk
I work at an environmental education camp located inside a national park. I spend my days telling people about the many benefits of time spent in nature.
When headlines claiming that, “sitting will kill you” started to sound like they were written just for me, I reasonably and responsibly looked online for stand-up desks. I bought an activity monitor, parked further from my office and scheduled walking meetings. It wasn’t enough.
My husband and I started talking about taking some time off. Ideas evolved into plans and then, a few weeks ago I sat down with my boss and told him that I wanted to take ten months off to travel the country. I told him that I liked my job and would be interested in working remotely. I said that I hoped that we could work something out but would be okay with whatever he decided.
He could not have been more supportive.
So now comes the exciting and intimidating process of getting ready to go. There’s something so thrilling about the prospect of the unexpected—of endless days where anything could happen.
Weather permitting we’ll hit the road on January 1, 2015.
