Three Month Check-in
After three months on the road, we’ve stopped home for a couple of weeks to do laundry, attend to the needs of our previous life and generally regroup. The house seems big. Too big, really. And full of stuff. Waaaay too much stuff. Even without television or internet (I cancelled the cable before leaving) I feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of choices. Where to sit, what to wear, even which bathroom to use. I crave the confines of my tiny home on wheels. I think this is how recently released prisoners must feel.
Preparations for the next leg—heading east and then north to Canada—are underway. I’ll spare you descriptions of chores and errands and instead take this opportunity to look back at our travels through the south and southwest and share a few thoughts:
- Seventy degrees and sunny almost always makes places seem nicer.
- I like cheap campsites. In the majority of cases, the cheaper the site was, the more I liked it.
- One exception was Pecan Grove RV Park in Austin. Not cheap, but a favorite. Then again, it was seventy and sunny. Hmmmm…
- I have no regrets about choosing not to tow a vehicle. There are a number of places we did not go because we did not have a car. I couldn’t care less.
- Our inflatable kayak? A great idea. And a lot more fun than a car.
- Three months goes really fast. Frighteningly fast. I left most every stop wishing I could have stayed longer—a trend which I expect will continue.
We leave for the Smokies on April 16. I can’t wait to see what happens next.
